Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have operated alongside France's air force in a coordinated attack on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The location, located using reconnaissance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just above Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets used Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of entry passages leading to the site... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were assisted by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation demonstrates British leadership, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the region," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS following its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this mission for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among a great many UK service members on duty over the festive period. This operation, to take out militants who threaten our way of life, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Daesh sites in the country, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The UN says IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
